About Tommy Frederick

Tommy Frederick was born and raised in Vermilion Parish. He has been a familiar face in youth sports, having coached in the Babe Ruth League, Cal Ripken League, and for Team Louisiana. He has also served as a member of the Abbeville High School Hall of Fame Committee. Tommy has been married to his beautiful wife, Stacey Longman Frederick, for 35 years and together they have two children: Thomas Jr., a physical therapist, and Paige, an elementary school teacher. Thomas and his wife Caitlyn have two sons, Tripp and Landon. Tommy and Stacey are dedicated parishioners at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church where Tommy is a eucharistic minister.

Tommy is a graduate of Abbeville High School, the University of Southwestern Louisiana, and the Paul M Hebert Law Center at LSU. After graduating in 1989, he worked as a judicial law clerk for Honorable Durwood Conque in the 15th Judicial District. In 1991 he started his own law practice in Abbeville. From 1991-2001, he was a staff attorney with the Public Defender’s Office, serving Vermilion Parish. During this time Tommy handled juvenile, traffic, misdemeanor, and felony cases and was one of only two Death Penalty Defense Certified Attorneys for Vermilion Parish. From 2001-2002, he was an Assistant District Attorney in the 15th Judicial District.

Since 2002 Tommy has served as the Commissioner (Magistrate) for the 15th Judicial District. As Commissioner he has handled most preliminary criminal matters in Vermilion, Acadia, and Lafayette Parishes. He has worked with law enforcement agencies in all 3 parishes, reviewing and approving arrest and search warrants. He has built strong relationships with attorneys, clerks, deputy clerks of court, and fellow judges in all three parishes, which will allow him to smoothly transition into this office of judgeship.

Like many other industries and professions, our judicial system has been greatly affected and has been practically shut down by the healthcare emergency caused by COVID-19. When this pandemic is over we, in Vermilion Parish, will need someone with the knowledge, skill, and experience to hit the ground running, rather than someone who is trying to learn the job. Tommy Frederick has knowledge and expertise, and has demonstrated the necessary work ethic, to get this job done efficiently and effectively.
